On the Kona Coast, cocoa is grown, handpicked, sun dried and processed by cacao growers who adhere to the highest standards of excellence. The cocoa is then sent to The Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory and made into pure Hawaiian chocolate.

“Traditionally, chocolate is made by blending beans from various geographical regions around the world,” explains owner Bob Cooper. “The challenge we faced and met was to produce a chocolate of excellent flavor, texture and taste utilizing exclusively 100 percent Hawaiian-grown cocoa beans, making it the first chocolate of its kind in the world!”

Founded in December 1999, The Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory is comprised of a six-acre farm and six employees. The chocolate is made by grinding pure chocolate “nibs” (from the cocoa beans) into a chocolate liquor paste, which is then combined with cocoa butter, sugar, vanilla powder and/or milk powder, depending on whether dark or milk chocolate is being made.

“Quality in the production of our Original Hawaiian Chocolate begins in the basic belief that doing something in the right way, for the right reasons and at the right time brings satisfaction in our products for ourselves and our customers,” says Pam Cooper, owner.

Products include milk chocolate and dark chocolate, both available in one-pound bars, three-ounce bars and five-ounce boxes of bite-sized, plumeria-shaped chocolates. Original Hawaiian Chocolate can be found in retail shops throughout the islands and at a few shops on the mainland. The Coopers also participate in local farmers’ markets when the weather is cool. Orders can be placed through the company’s website.
